"Heroes" is een nummer dat is gegroeid naarmate de jaren verstreken. Het is betekenisvoller geworden. Bijvoorbeeld deze strofe: "Ik kan me herinneren dat ik bij de muur stond / En de geweren boven onze hoofden schoten / En dat we elkaar kusten, alsof er niets kon gebeuren." Het is bekend dat Bowie het album "Heroes" opnam in de Hansa Tonstudio's in Berlijn, West-Duitsland, in de periode dat de stad werd verdeeld door de Berlijnse muur. Het beeld van twee gedoemde geliefden die hun relatie in stand hielden terwijl krachten om hen heen probeerden hen te stoppen, was een opzienbarend beeld - en zeer relevant voor de periode van de Koude Oorlog die zou duren tot de muur in 1989 viel. Symbolisch staat het voor mensen die door de muur van de dood van elkaar gescheiden worden.
