Het nummer is afkomstig van het Queen album A Kind of Magic uit 1986. Het werd geschreven door gitarist Brian May voor de soundtrack van de film Highlander. Het nummer werd in september 1986 wereldwijd op single uitgebracht, maar was commercieel gezien weinig succesvol. Na het overlijden van Freddie Mercury in 1991 werd het nummer in Nederland opnieuw uitgebracht. Componist en bandgitarist Brian May vertelt: Het opende een soort sluisdeur in mij - ik had te maken met veel tragedies in mijn leven: de dood van mijn vader, de dood van mijn huwelijk, enzovoort. Ik kon onmiddellijk dit 'Who Wants to Live Forever' in mijn hoofd horen, en het was bijna compleet in de auto naar huis - ik herinner me dat ik het tegen mijn manager zong terwijl hij me naar huis reed, en hij was behoorlijk verrast. komt dat vandaan?' en ik zei: 'Ik weet het niet eens.'"
